Advances in medicine have contributed to the extension of the average American life expectancy resulting in a large increase in our elderly population. The nursing home industry has struggled to keep pace with the growth of our elderly population. The failure of nursing homes to provide adequate numbers of qualified staff members has led to horrible occurrences of neglect and abuse. Residents of nursing homes often suffer from inattention, dehydration, malnutrition, medication administration errors and bedsores. Too often the failure of a nursing home facility to appropriately care for our elderly population is a direct result of its focus on profits at the expense of the care and well being of the residents.
